Q -
What is a "thrasher?"
A - It's the state bird of Georgia.
Q - Doesn't the NHL team mind you using their name?
A - Actually, we had the name first! Dawn Mehler started the Atlanta
Thrashers Women's Hockey team in 1996. The NHL team was named
in 1999. The "Lady" was just added after a while to avoid confusion.
Q - Where do you play?
A - At the Cooler in Alpharetta.
Q - Who do you play against?
A - We break up into two teams for our Wednesday scrimmages, and
we also travel around the country to play other
women's teams.
Q - Do I have to travel/Can I travel?
A - Travel is optional. Some tournaments are reserved for our USA
Hockey travel team, and others are open to anyone who wants to
go.
Q - Do you have a coach?
A - Yes. Wednesday practices are coached by the Atlanta Thrashers
Hockey Development Team.
Q - Is there body checking?
A - There is no body checking in the women's game at any level.
However, there is incidental contact and the occasional running
into each other.
Q - Am I too old/young to play?
A - No! Our age range has spanned from 14 - 55!
Q - I've never even ice skated before. Can I still play?
A - Yes! We welcome everyone, even if you've never played before.
Q - How much does it cost?
A - An 18-week season costs around $235. We also require a USA
Hockey membership, which is $35 annually.
